Tribes And Arts Dealers Debate How Best To Bring Sacred Objects Home
May 26, 2017 – Acoma Pueblo is commonly known by visitors for its sky city village, which sits atop a sandstone bluff west of Albuquerque. The pueblo is rich in culture and recognized for its artistry. The tribe and others in the Southwest are experiencing the removal and trafficking of cultural items both nationally and internationally.
Tribal leaders say it’s an uphill battle trying to get sacred objects returned home.
Tribal repatriation efforts include working with various levels of governments and members of Congress. Some tribal arts dealers and collectors do not support federal legislation and are working on voluntary returns. Correspondent Antonia Gonzales sits down this week with representatives from the Pueblo of Acoma, a Native arts group and an arts dealers association.
