SciGirls
SciGirls, has a mission to change how millions of girls think about STEM! Developed by Twin Cities Public Television, for kids ages 8-12, showcases bright, curious real tween girls putting science and engineering to work in their everyday lives.
New Mexico PBS brings SciGirls into New Mexico Communities! Certified SciGirls Trainer, Hollie Lovely has provided professional development opportunities to over 180 afterschool program providers and teachers with hands on SciGirls activities using research informed and foundational implementation strategies that are proven to engage girls, in a variety of STEM careers. The SciGirls approach uses inquiry based challenges, incorporating fun and challenging hands-on activities with female role mentors. Locally, programs bring in community female role models in various STEM fields, from the University of New Mexico and throughout the New Mexico STEM community.
SciGirls Afterschool Clubs: APS middle schools have been piloting SciGirls curriculum for research. Two are successfully running SciGirls afterschool programs. With additional funding from Sandia National Labs, helps to support this unique and successful afterschool program, allowing girls to experience STEM in a fun and informal setting.
PAPA-Public Academy for the Performing Arts: Hosted SciGirls Code afterschool club, for their second year investigating coding and computer science curriculum, such as Web and mobile App development, programming robotics, and E-Textiles.
SciGirls Summer Camps: In partnership with UNM Continuing Education, SciGirls summer camps were held for three summers on the University of New Mexico Campus. Over the summer, girls ages 10-13 participated in 2 three-week SciGirls camps and worked with female role models. UNM Engineering Students and Faculty provided had hands-on STEM activities daily serving for 150 girls. In summer of 2018, we partnered with Central New Mexico Community College for a successful one week camp for 100 girls.
