New Mexico State Senator Talks About Bill That Bans “Lunch Shaming”
April 12, 2017 – Schools in New Mexico will no longer be able to use “school lunch shaming” practices like making students clean the cafeteria for a hot meal or stamping their arm with a message for parents about lunch debt. Our state is the first in the nation to pass such legislation and the issue is receiving national, and international, news coverage this week.
Producer Sarah Gustavus sat down with Senator Michael Padilla to talk about how his experiences as a child influenced his work on the legislation and why he thinks it will help reduce stigmatization of poor kids in schools.
