Lenton Malry: A Life of Firsts
February 23, 2018 – Lenton Malry grew up in the segregated south, but he rarely let obstacles derail him from what he wanted to do in life. His autobiography “Let’s Roll This Train” chronicles his upbringing in Louisiana, his time in the U.S. Air Force, where he first experienced a non-segregated life on base and in Europe, and his eventual move to New Mexico. In New Mexico, he logged many firsts: First black principal in Albuquerque Public Schools, first black county commissioner in Bernalillo County, and first black legislator in the New Mexico Roundhouse. Malry spoke with NMiF Correspondent Megan Kamerick about his relentless optimism and what drove him to focus on education and politics in New Mexico.
