The Line: Senate Bill 19 Reforms Court-Ordered Guardianship
July 20, 2018 – The law to reform the New Mexico court-ordered guardianship system took effect on July 1st. The system is supposed to protect those deemed incapacitated through brain injury, dementia, or other cognitive disabilities. The reforms have come about, however, in the wake of criminal investigations into guardianship firms accused of stealing millions of dollars from clients, refusing to allow visits by family members, and other offenses. Gene Grant and the Line opinion panel debate whether the bill goes far enough to protect vulnerable clients.
