Oil & Gas Squeezes Hotels In Carlsbad, But Offers Financial Support For Arts

November 2, 2018 – The oil and gas boom in southern New Mexico and West Texas has driven up hotel rates in Carlsbad. At the same time, a housing shortage means more people are turning to hotels for housing and there are fewer rooms available at affordable rates.

But more nights booked up in hotels also means the city is collecting record-high revenues from lodgers taxes.  Some of those dollars are going to support arts and culture activities around town and the revitalization of an old theater.
