Joan Naviyuk Kane: Bringing An Alaskan Perspective To Teaching In Santa Fe

Joan Kane is an Alaska Native poet who grew up in Anchorage with family from King Island and Mary’s Igloo, Alaska. A graduate of Harvard and Columbia University’s School of the Arts, Kane is the author of a number of collections of poetry. Her lyric poems are rooted in her Arctic homeland. Although she lives in Alaska, she teaches part of the year at the Institute of American Indian Arts, or IAIA, in Santa Fe. Kane recently sat down with New Mexico in Focus correspondent Russell Contreras to talk about her work.
