U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo
November 29, 2019 – While she is an enrolled member of the Muscogee Creek Nation, Joy Harjo has long ties to New Mexico. She graduated from the Institute of American Indian Arts and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of New Mexico. In June, the Library of Congress named Harjo America’s poet laureate. She’s the 23rd person to hold the position, but the first Native American. Correspondent Megan Kamerick traveled to Santa Fe to watch Harjo perform her poetry and music, and to talk with her about how the role can impact other Indigenous artists.
