June 26, 2020 – Protests against racism and debates over monuments have captivated Santa Fe, both in past decades and today. The focal point of the debate today is a Civil War-era obelisk that once referred to Native Americans as “savage.” Vandals defaced it and in the same week, the city removed a statue of Don Diego de Vargas from Cathedral Park.
