Climate Change ‘Outpaced’ Fire Protocols
7.22.2022 – It’s been a devastating fire season in New Mexico, with hot, dry, and windy conditions throughout the spring and summer – plus two U.S. Forest Service prescribed fire treatments that burned out of control, merging into New Mexico’s largest fire in recorded history, the Hermits Peak – Calf Canyon Fire. New Mexico State Forester Laura McCarthy talks about the conditions that led to this year’s historic fire season in New Mexico and shares her thoughts on how to plan safer prescribed fires in the future, as climate change has “outpaced” current fire protocols.
