U.S. Attorney Alexander Uballez & Federal Complaint Filed over Torrance County Detention Facility
This week on New Mexico in Focus, U.S. Attorney Alexander Uballez speaks with correspondent Russell Contreras in his first interview on NMPBS. Russell asks about Uballez’s background, his approach to the position, youth gun violence, the effectiveness of the Department of Justice’s police reform efforts in Albuquerque and several initiatives his office is pursuing to expand services on the Navajo Nation.
Executive Producer Jeff Proctor sits down with Sophia Genovese from the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center to talk about a new complaint alleging human rights abuses at the Torrance County Detention Facility. The 186-page document highlights a litany of alleged violations, including rushed interviews advocates say jeopardize migrants’ safety while unjustly damaging their opportunity for asylum.
As NMiF transitions from longtime host Gene Grant, correspondents Gwyneth Doland, Russell Contreras and Antonia Gonzales gather for a conversation about their work for the show. Each journalist explains their history in the field and gives the audience an idea of what type of stories to expect from them in the coming weeks and months.
