Western New Mexico University’s Regent Seats Remain Vacant

3.14.25 Last fall, a state audit report found more than $360,000 in questionable travel and purchases by the president of Western New Mexico University. Since then, the president and all but one regent have resigned. Senior Producer Lou DiVizio speaks with state Sen. Gabriel Ramos, a Republican whose Silver City district includes Western, about damage to the school’s reputation and why replacing those regents is taking so long.

After taping this week’s show, a spokesperson for Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office announced the Governor had officially nominated four people to serve on WNMU’s Board of Regents. The spokesperson confirmed that as of the afternoon of Thursday, March 13, the Senate Rules Committee notified and asked to schedule confirmation hearings for Joseph Dean Reed, John V. Wertheim, Keana Richelle Huerta and Steven Paul Neville.
