Is New Mexico’s Capital Outlay Process Broken?
January 22, 2016 – New Mexico in Focus is partnering with other nonprofit media outlets this year on coverage of the 2016 legislative session. The People, Power and Democracy project will highlight efforts to address ethics, transparency and accountability in state government.
This week, reporter Gwyneth Doland takes us to the Roundhouse to hear arguments for and against reforming the state’s current system for allocating capital outlay money to public infrastructure projects like roads, bridges and dams. These funds are also often used to meet other needs like school supplies and equipment. Should the capital outlay process be reformed? Let us know what you think in the comments.
People, Power and Democracy is a collaborative media project between KUNM, New Mexico in Depth, New Mexico News Port and New Mexico PBS that explores the influence of money in New Mexico politics.
Support for the project comes from the Thornburg Foundation.
