#NMspeaks Crisis: Bringing Stories About Behavioral Health To Lawmakers

February 12, 2026 – In this week’s show, the Line opinion panelists discussed the announcement that the Attorney General’s office cleared 10 behavioral health providers that were accused of fraudulent Medicaid billing by the New Mexico Human Services Department in 2013.

Access to behavioral health services is an issue across New Mexico, particularly in rural communities. Lawmakers are also currently considering a 19 percent cut to the human service department’s behavioral health services division, which would equal about 8 million dollars.

Producers with Generation Justice interviewed 60 clients, providers and community leaders over the past year and shared their stories online in a series of videos that are part of the #NMspeaksCrisis campaign.

Producer Sarah Gustavus sits down this week with a Generation Justice fellow and a leader in the behavioral health field to talk about the ongoing challenges people are facing in New Mexico as they seek out treatment for themselves or loved ones.
