A Storm is Coming
Last night, I stayed up far too late, refreshing election results and The New York Times homepage. Like many people, I had a hard time getting out of bed this morning. I read texts from beloved friends, my worried college-aged daughter, and journalism colleagues.
I still didn’t want to get out of bed.
Then, I tore myself from the news and checked the weather.
There’s a winter storm coming to the Middle Rio Grande Valley. And so, I knew I needed to take care of things before coming into work. I needed to scale the ladder and muck out leaves and dirt from the gutters, stow the garden hoses, put my bike in the shed, fill all the bird feeders, and blow out the heating vents.
If you’re in New Mexico, you, too, should prepare for the storm — and consider how to keep yourself safe and also care for your neighbors, human and more-than-human.
I know that many people are reeling from the election. This election will have severe consequences on the environment and communities in New Mexico. In the coming weeks, I’ll be here to cover those issues, have some serious conversations, and highlight not only what’s at stake when a storm is approaching, but what’s worth protecting and nurturing.
