Broadband Internet at four Pueblos in Northern New Mexico, Suicide Prevention, The Line Discusses New Cannabis Law

This week, New Mexico in Focus looks at four Pueblos in Northern New Mexico that will soon have access to broadband internet in their libraries, after years without access to high-speed internet. Correspondent Antonia Gonzales visits the dig site and tribal libraries for the “State of Change” series, part of a collaboration with the Solutions Journalism Network and media partners across the state.

Suicide prevention is especially important in New Mexico, which has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation. Producer Sarah Gustavus sits down with Wendy Linebrink-Allison, program manager for a crisis support line, to learn more about resources that are available for people who want to reach out for assistance for a loved one or themselves.

NMiF host Gene Grant and the Line opinion panelists discuss the Albuquerque City Council’s 5-4 vote to reduce the penalties for possessing small amounts of cannabis. They also debate how the financial mess in the University of New Mexico athletics department may jeopardize funding for the whole university, and look at a recent report from the Alzheimer’s Association that says New Mexico has the nation’s fourth-highest growth rate of the disease.
