Behind the Rio Grande Sun’s History and Sale
5.6.22 – The Rio Grande Sun was established in October of 1956. It was started by two couples dedicated to covering Espanola and Rio Arriba County. Under the leadership of the Trapp family, the paper gained national attention for its investigative journalism and dedication to watchdog journalism. Recently, Editor and Publisher Robert Trapp made the decision to sell the paper to an ownership group that includes two former Republican Party Chairmen. Host Gene Grant talks with Robert Trapp about his decision to sell, and what it means for local news coverage in Northern New Mexico. To help explore some of the historical context, this segment also includes excerpts from the Ben Daitz documentary “The Sun Never Sets,” which followed the paper and its workers during the early days of the internet. That documentary originally aired on NMPBS in 2013 and will be re-broadcast on May 19th at 7pm.
