“Game of Thrones” Author George R.R. Martin; Violent Attacks Against Homeless, Pojoaque Pueblo Gambling Compact, Legalization of Marijuana
Author George R.R. Martin has skyrocketed to fame through his “Game of Thrones” novels and the resulting HBO series. On the next NEW MEXICO IN FOCUS, airing Friday, August 1, at 7:00pm, the Santa Fe resident speaks with correspondent Gwyneth Doland about his creative process, the pressure from fans to finish the series of books, and how he creates and keeps track of hundreds of characters.
Also on the program, the Line opinion panel discusses the brutal slayings of two homeless men in Albuquerque. Three teenage boys have been charged in the murders, and, according to a criminal complaint, one of the boys said the three of them have been targeting many homeless people over the last year. The two victims were members of the Navajo Nation and many Native leaders say violent attacks against homeless Native Americans are common.
The panel also looks at a move by Pojoaque Pueblo to obtain a gambling compact with the federal government after negotiations with the state for a new compact broke down last year. And the Line looks at efforts to reduce criminal penalties for marijuana in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, a push that is also happening in other states.
