Health Care Legislation and Aging in New Mexico
This week on New Mexico in Focus, Politics Correspondent Gwyneth Doland catches us up on several high-profile health care bills introduced at the Roundhouse. She speaks with Fred Nathan from Think New Mexico about a bipartisan bill aimed at changing our state’s medical malpractice law. Gwyneth also chatted with state Sen. Nicole Tobiassen and Rep. Marianna Anaya about other health care bills on their radar.
According to the state Health Department, young people in New Mexico are subjected to the highest rates of adverse childhood experiences in the nation. These experiences, known as ACEs, can add up and have devastating effects on children. Senior Producer Lou DiVizio sits down with Dr. Evalyn Plumb, a clinical psychologist with UNM’s Project ECHO, to talk about a program focused on counteracting the impacts of ACEs in an effort to head off several chronic conditions in childhood. In this two-part conversation, Lou asks about the program’s early results.
State Rep. Sarah Silva talks with Gwyneth about a proposed bill that would update our state’s journalism shield law. The bill would prohibit state agencies from compelling reporters to cough up confidential sources or information — with a few limited exceptions.
KUNM’s Megan Kamerick asks Chip Conley, an expert on aging, what an expected boom in New Mexico’s elderly population could mean for our state.
