NM Women in Technology Awards, Chichi Okafor, Bioneers, Media Landscape in NM

)

This week’s NEW MEXICO IN FOCUS celebrates International Women’s Day (March 8) by talking to some of the winners of the Women in Technology awards, sponsored by the New Mexico Technology Council. NMiF correspondent Furhana Afrid interviews winners Julianna Silva, the Albuquerque regional manager of WESST, Lisa Abeyta, founder of APPCityLife, and Kim Griego, a teacher at Cleveland High and a technology leader. They are joined by Lisa Adkins, chair of the New Mexico Technology Council.

Furhana Afrid also sits down with an entrepreneur from Nigeria to talk about her work getting teenage girls in her country to pursue careers in science and technology. After learning about IGNITE (Inspiring Girls Now in Technology Evolution) during a 2009 U.S.A. trip, Chichi Okafor returned to her country to start the successful IGNITE Nigeria. She was brought here by the Albuquerque Council for International Visitors to share her story.

NMiF Producer Megan Kamerick talks with Nina Simons about the transformative potential of women’s leadership. Nina Simons, an award winning social entrepreneur, writes and teaches about leadership, diversity, and restoring the feminine, and is co-founder of Bioneers. Among the organization’s several programs is the radio series, Bioneers: Revolution from the Heart of Nature, featuring interviews and presentations from the Bioneers Conference archives.

A special, all-journalist Line opinion panel talks about the media landscape in New Mexico. Albuquerque Business First rolled out a re-launch recently, and the dissipation of traditional revenue models has prompted many media outlets to re-think how they reach readers and viewers.
