Poet Laureate Joy Harjo Reading: The Fight
November 27, 2020 – Joy Harjo is the nation’s first ever native American Poet Laureate. And just this month, she was appointed to a third term beginning of September 2021. Harjo is only the second poet to be honored with a third term. In this clip, she talks about the story behind her poem “The Fight” before giving the audience at IAIA’s Museum of Contemporary Native Arts. Harjo went to school at the Institute of American Indian Arts and the University of New Mexico. (This reading was recorded in the fall of 2019)
