The Line: How Police Officers Handle People Experiencing Mental Illness
November 17, 2017 – The Santa Fe New Mexican reported this week on the response by a crisis negotiation team in the police department to a call with a man in crisis who was schizophrenic. Anthony Benavidez was shot and killed by police officers after barricading himself inside his apartment. The response by police is raising new questions about how officers and specialized responders are trained for such calls.
