The Line: Results Of 2018 PARCC Tests Show Slight Improvement Statewide

July 20, 2018 – The results of the 2018 PARCC tests show that statewide, New Mexico made some slight improvements in math and language arts proficiency, with some school districts dramatically outperforming others. Still, only 31.1% of New Mexico’s students are proficient in reading skills, and only 21.6% in math. PED Secretary Designate Christopher Ruszkowski says the improvements show “what happens when you stay the course.”  But critics, including many educators, say the low numbers show the fault lies in the standardized test itself and call it a poor way to evaluate students’ knowledge.  Gene Grant and the Line opinion debate whether New Mexico should “stay the course,” or seek alternative forms of measuring student achievement.
