UNM Athletics Director Eddie Nuñez Assesses The Department’s Past & Potential Future
July 20, 2018 – The University of New Mexico Board of Regents voted this week to kill four sports programs in order to plug a roughly 2 million dollar a year budget hole. The affected programs include men’s soccer, women’s beach volleyball, and the men’s and women’s ski teams. New Athletic Director Eddie Nuñez was tasked with coming up with a plan to bring the department’s budget in line, and he sat down with correspondent Khalil Ekulona days before making his recommendation and the ensuing Regents’ vote. They discussed all the factors that play into the university’s dilemma, from rising travel costs that weren’t matched with additional funding to the need to also address noncompliance with the federal civil rights law Title IX.
